Biography

Ruth has worked as an artist for the past 28 years, teaching A-Level Fine Art to students in South Bristol while developing her own painting practice over the last six years. Her work is now exhibited in galleries across the UK, including St Ives, where she regularly shows as a Penwith Associate Member.

Working primarily in acrylics, with oils and pastels added later, Ruth aims to give us the sense that we are immersed in the landscape.   Some pieces remain recognisable, while others move further towards abstraction.  As Ruth says, ‘although I fight against being labelled as working in a distinct style, my work is expressive and always from the soul’

With a BA (Hons) in ceramics, Ruth’s sculpture training gives her a strong sensitivity to texture, often reflected in contrasts drawn from the natural world, such as rugged cliffs meeting smooth, flowing water. A sense of drawing is also central to her work, either underpinning a piece or appearing freely as a final expressive layer. Her approach remains deeply personal, with each painting carrying its own thought and moment in time. Together, these qualities create work that feels both grounded in the landscape and alive with Ruth’s own expressive response to it.

Watching the daily changing ‘Light on Landscape’ really helps me celebrate the gift we have been given with this planet and the natural world around us, life is precious, lets enjoy it every day.

I am a landscape painter, living rurally on the edge of the Mendips, I like to think my style is expressive and immediate, drawing on years of observing. I love the world around me, and landscapes are my absolute passion, through walking, surfing and horse riding I enjoy connecting with the rural seascapes and landscapes of the UK.  Whether painting ‘en plain air’, or back in the studio, I pull on all my senses to express my emotional response to the world around us, with my work exploring the lived experience of being in the landscape and aiming to aiming to offer viewers a sense of wild freedom, hope and lifted horizons.

If you would like to know more about my work, or enquire about a piece in particular, please do get in touch:)

Best wishes,

Ruth
